On my car the DPF automatically regenerates every 150 to 200 miles so on that basis it would probably take a while to hit 400% in normal circumstances. In your case I'd suspect there is another fault causing increased levels of particulates to be produced.
Try not to shut off the engine during DPF regeneration, it’s easy to see when it’s happening. Usually when sitting with car in neutral instant consumption is 0.3-0.6 L/h. When dpf regen is active, inst consumption is >2 L/h. Dpf regen takes about 20-25 min, and it should be done when driving.
We have encountered the problem of it doing the DPF regen and not suceeding - this results in diesel going into the oil and the pressure dropping. Basically, I'm wondering - does anyone know how you can tell if the regen is happening so that we can make sure the car is running?
